MaresConnect Limited announces Public Consultation events for proposed 750MW electricity interconnector
Public consultations to discuss MaresConnect, the proposed 750MW electricity interconnector between Ireland and Wales, have been announced by the developer MaresConnect Limited.
Following the public consultation events in February 2024, along with the completion of subsea surveys and further onshore assessment, MaresConnect has identified a preferred landfall location near Abergele, and a preferred converter station zone containing three candidate sites.
Three potential onshore cable routes remain under consideration – two within the local road network, and one crossing agricultural and recreational land. It is important to note that the onshore cable routes remain at an early stage and are subject to significant changes. All feedback is welcome.
The final converter station site and cable route will be selected following these consultation events, ongoing consultation and the completion of further technical and environmental assessments.

This connection supports greater energy security, helps integrate more renewable energy into the grid, and can help ease pressure on wholesale electricity prices for consumers.
